Start with the basics.

Check oil and coolant levels and top them up if needed.

Have a good look at hoses, belts and filters for any cracks or wear.

If the tractor’s been parked up over winter, drain off any stale fuel and refill with clean diesel.

It’s a simple job that avoids issues with water or sludge in the tank later.

Battery and Electrics

Winter storage can leave batteries tired.

Check the charge and clean the terminals to keep connections solid.

Test all the lights, indicators and beacons they’re vital for road safety and early starts.

While you’re at it, look over the wiring.

Mice have a habit of chewing through cables when things are left standing.

Tyres and Wheels

Good tyres make a big difference in the field.

Check tread depth and look for cuts, splits or bulges in the sidewalls.

Set the pressures to the right levels for your soil conditions.

Tighten the wheel nuts and look for rust or corrosion around the rims before you head out.

Hydraulics and Transmission

Give the hydraulic system a once-over.

Check oil levels, filters and look for leaks around the hoses and couplings.

Test the lift arms and PTO to be sure everything’s running freely.

It’s better to spot a leak now than when you’re halfway across a field with the drill hitched up.

Cab and Controls

You’ll be spending plenty of time in the seat soon, so it’s worth a quick clean-out.

Dust off the cab and check that mirrors and wipers work properly.

Make sure the seat and seatbelt are in good condition.

If your tractor runs GPS or auto-steer, do a quick calibration so it’s ready to go when you are.

Safety and Paperwork

Before heading out on the road or into the yard, make sure all PTO guards and shields are properly in place.

Check that insurance, registration and MOTs are current.

It’s also wise to have a first-aid kit and a working fire extinguisher in the cab, they’re easy to forget until you need them.

Final Checks

Once everything’s been inspected, start the tractor and let it warm up.

Listen for any rattles or odd noises and keep an eye on the dashboard lights.

A short run in the yard can help you spot anything that needs attention before you’re busy in the field.

Ready for the Season

Putting in a bit of time now means fewer headaches later.

With the tractor checked over and ready, you’ll be set to make the most of every good weather window.

That’s what counts when spring work gets into full swing.
